design competition | ARCASIA FORUM 20 2019, BANGLADESH

The design reflects the effect how a landscape changes from it’s natural form.  The logo has been derived from a circle that represents a globe and the white lines represents the elements of nature. The bottom white line represents the shoreline of Cox’s bazar where the program is going to be held. The top white line represents mountain. In between lines shows the effect of human intervention (by architecture) in nature which tends to be flatten from its original form. The whole idea is to show how landscape changes from water and earth to mountain as well as how it transforms by architecture. Each stage of change is a threshold.  Therefore, in the logo each white line also represnets a threshold where it start to experience a change. So, the concept of the logo is being proposed as “THRESHOLD”

Theme of the Forum: Architecture in changing landscape

The design illustrates a concept of Displacement and how it changes physical landscapes of a country. Displacement itself is a broad term, where Human Displacement defines as forced movement of people from their home, or country or origin. It can also be termed as forced migration. In the history of Bangladesh human displacement can be traced back since 1947 right after the partition when a massive population immediately migrated from India to East Bengal. Recent incident of the Rohingya refugee influx into Bangladesh is another event of displacement. Therefore, these sort of event has a great impact on a physical landscape of a country. The logo has been derived from a triangle which represents an abstract form of A, the initial of ARCASIA. Abstract human figure, greater in scale on the north part refers to those people who are privileged to live in their own place. Human figure on the south part refers to those refugees who are forcefully moved and therefore the scale of the human starts to demean. The deformed shape of triangle represents transformed landscapes.  There are 21 number of geometric shape in the form of triangle and circle, which represents 21 participating country. The green and red color represents the national flag of Bangladesh (host country). The green triangle containing pattern of water illustrates deltaic Bangla.

Concept of the logo: ROOT

Design Statement

‘ROOT’ means source or origin of a thing. Here I chose the name as a metaphor. As Paper Studio is the pioneer in creating the concept of fine paper in Bangladesh, so they are the prime factor that has given a new dimension in our paper industry. This does not use paper only as a writing or printing medium rather it has added new value in the use of paper in product design such as invitation card, gift box, co-ordinate event decoration items, book designed. Their idea of using paper as an element of various products has changed the aesthetic perception of people of Bangladesh. The high quality paper and printing of Paper Studio allowed the designer from various sector in expressing their ideas through creative designs that achieves international standard. They have brought revolution in our paper industry, so I named my theme as ‘ROOT’ that express the contribution and revolution regarding paper they have brought in our country.
The symbol in A4 paper represents ‘ROOT’, where one ‘O’ has shown as a representation of folded paper with 3 converging circle and ‘T’ has an origami symbol on its top and a letterhead on its bottom, all together presenting the various function of paper in an abstract form. In the visiting card this symbol will be in emboss form.
